I come bearing a third picture... This is the controversial concrete cross on Mt. Davidson. Mt. Davidson is the highest point (a hill, really) in San Francisco, but because of the trees in the park that surrounds the cross, you actually can't see it from most of the city. You can, however, see it as you face due east on the roof, and so I offer you this (sort of lousy) picture: This will take you to the San Francisco Historical Society's page devoted to Mount Davidson (which mostly means the history of the cross), and this will take you to the American Atheists' site about efforts to get the cross torn down. As far as I know, the sale (to an Armenian-American group that uses it, when not for Easter services, as a memorial to the victims of the 1915 massacre by the Turks -- which drew no small protest from the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles -- you can see what the Turkish Embassy has to say about the Armenian massacre at this site if you follow the link to 'Armenian Allegations'; in the interest of fairness, I will provide this link to a site that is meant as a memorial to the genocide, but you-all should really have a look around for yourselves. Note well that this entire parenthetical phrase is due to disappear soon.) has been upheld by the full court... in any case, the cross is still up there. No more pictures tonight, I think. |

Can you think of something new to help me fill this space? |
